Surviving with 2 Boys - Joshy, 18 Months & Nicholas, 3 Years, 5 months

It's been over a year and a half since my last entry....sigh. I had every intentions of keeping track of Joshua's development, but the addition of a second boy has meant double the work. You quickly realize how much time you used to have when you have children! Now, there's virtually no time for anything but to survive.

Joshy is now 18 months old. When I bring him to school with Nicholas, everyone marvels at how he is a replica of Nicholas. His personality is very different though - he doesn't have the serious nature of Nicholas and he is quite strong willed. He knows what he likes, and doesn't like. He has about 35 words now, so he's moved on from just "dada", which was basically his whole vocabulary at 1 years old.

Current favorites: medeo means again; nooooo!; cereal; Johua (pointing at himself), purple, turtle, apple, nai nai, peck peck (after I showed him a woodpecker), elmo (whom he loves).

He loves to eat, unlike Nicholas and lately we find him climbing our chairs onto the dining room table to grab at whatever scraps are left on the table. He will chew food up and spit it out, only to pick it back up and put it back in his mouth. Yuck! He loves to eat cereal, and tries to pour his own milk and apple juice. He grabs his plates and bowls for us to give him his food. As Nicholas can attest, Joshua is MESSY! He is usually covered with porridge and throws his rice onto the ground. Nicholas has been meticulous about having anything on his fingers - Joshy loves it.

Last week, he began to hum Ba Ba sheep, so I am excited to hear him develop more words. I remember singing Nicholas Twinkle, Twinkle and ba ba sheep when he was Joshy's age. I remember those days so well. I was pregnant with Joshua and so excited to give Nicholas a new brother.

Joshy loves his time with Nana, Yeye, Popo, and Yi Yi. He has no problems when I drop him off - sauntering off to find his toys and he will amuse himself for a longer period than Nicholas would. At Nana's, he loves the fish magnet game and plays with it for at least 30 min. at a time. A few weeks ago, he protested Nana and YeYe singing a song, and Nana would have none of that. He was threatened with being put into another room, and realized that he couldn't behave badly.

He's also much more attached to Cameron at a younger age than Nicholas was. He just wants to be one of the boys. Cam is the first to grab Joshy out of his crib in the morning. Unlike Nicholas, he's not eager to climb out. We couldn't get Nicholas to stay in his crib at 18 months. What a difference!

I love bringing Joshy out for new experiences. Last week, we went to Dow's Lake and he looked at the ducks. He ran down the bike path, and I could tell that he loved the freedom of being outside and said hi to people as they passed. He's a wonderful little boy, with a friendly spirit.

Nicholas is now 3 Years, 5 months and maturing into quite a young man. He's still stubborn, but since we've figured out how to apply time out - he has been more manageable. He was a challenging 2 year old - spirited and loved to do whatever he liked. He ran off on me so many times, and often flailed his hands saying "I'm running away!". It was always at the wrong times - crossing the border going to Hawaii, at the Waimea Canyon in Kauai, shopping at the mall.

Most recently, Nicholas decided that he didn't need to cry anymore when I brought him to school. For many months, he found it difficult to say goodbye when we dropped him off at Ganon. As wonderful as the Morahs were - Kelli and Mali - he still wasn't able to hold himself back from crying. Nana's encouragement and thoughts of Bob the Builder "Yes I Can" helped him through this tough period. He now goes to school happily, and loves to bring Joshua into the play yard. He's starting to develop friendships and talks often of Jack, Jasmine-Paris, Myles, Gabriel, Waverly, Vienna, to name a few.

I am filled with happiness when I drop him off at Ganon. The Morah's are wonderful, and his experience so far has been positive. He loves his afternoon enrichment classes, especially Monkey Rocks John - sing with me guys - he often mimics John at Nana's house with the ukelele.

Nicholas' vocabulary is most impressive - he's able to demonstrate a high level of comprehension when we read to him. He is extremely observant and careful by nature - similar to Cam in many ways. He's blossomed this year, overcoming his reservedness and becoming more friendly with people he knows.

Survival is my mode at this moment. Cam's just started a new job, and I have been back at work since October. It's such a wonderful time in our lives - the boys truly bring Cam and I so much joy!
