Small World with OBGYN
This week, I went to see Dr. Chris J. Farrell for my 22nd week checkup. I was probably the most relaxed at this visit since we've gone though most of the major tests with flying colors. I've also been feeling regular movements, which also soothes my worries.
Dr. Farrell has been fantastic from the very start. When my family doctor first presented me with a list of doctors to choose from, I had no idea who to select. The list was overwhelming, so I quickly took a glance and noticed one that had the same last name as the OB that delivered me - Dr. P.J. Farrell in Sudbury. My mom always talked about him and I knew as early as Grade 4 that he was my delivery doctor. She must have liked him because she saw him regularly, went into the delivery room by herself, not speaking any english, and delivered without drugs.
My first impressions of Dr. Farrell was that he was very old school. He takes the time to answer every single question you have and is very thorough. He never rushes you out, which is likely why his office is often a 2 hour wait and filled with pregnant women. At about week 13, he also called me on my cell at 7:30 pm at night to talk over the results of genetic counseling that we went through at CHEO. While we already knew the results were ok, he still made the effort to call me personally and to review the good news. I was quite touched by this high level of care. I also went through a minor scare while traveling in Orlando, and called his office for advice. The office called me back within 1 hour and provided me sound advice.
They always say that it's a small world and indeed it is. Mary was telling me about 'rateyourdoctor.com' and since she also has Dr. Farrell, read a blurb saying that he was from Sudbury. I thought this was a coincidence - could he be related to the Dr. P.J. Farrell that delivered me?
Well, I asked him during my visit this week and indeed - his father was Dr. P.J. Farrell. I think I shocked him when I asked and we both smiled at the coincidence. It gives me even greater confidence now that I am in the hands of a doctor who likely received a lot of advice and training from his own father. My mom also let me know that his uncle delivered my sister in Sudbury.
Who would have known that a snap decision based on a last name would yield this kind of coincidence! I'm happy with my decision and look forward to telling Nicholas this great story.
